CARES Foundational Research

back to About CARES

The CARES Center is led by world-renowned UCLA researchers and clinicians who have contributed significantly to a better scientific understanding of the factors that promote emotional resilience as well as the prevention and treatment of childhood anxiety disorders. This research includes the development and rigorous testing of effective treatment methods for childhood anxiety disorders that have become the standard of care worldwide. It also spans studies that have investigated the factors that maintain childhood anxiety, how treatment can be optimized, and the impact parents, teachers and the greater community can play at fostering emotional resilience.

Below, you will find a list of selected publications by our team that have significantly deepened our understanding of how to foster increased emotional resilience and strong families and prevent and decrease the occurrence of childhood anxiety disorders.  This research serves as the foundation of the CARES Center.

Treatment

The Child/Adolescent Multimodal Anxiety Study (CAMS)
Funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, this definitive study compared CBT, Medication, and their Combination to Pill Placebo in 488 youth with anxiety.  CAMS has set the worldwide standard for the treatment of youth anxiety.

Long-Term Outcomes

The Child/Adolescent Multimodal Anxiety Extended Longitudinal Study (CAMELS)
CAMELS is the 9 year follow-up study of the youth originally treated in the CAMS study.  CAMELS demonstrated the long-term benefits of effective treatment, especially CBT, but also documented the chronic course of anxiety over the transition from childhood to adulthood with a significant proportion of study participants still suffering from clinically-significant anxiety.
